Johnny and his band are from the Bay Area and they know how to get the house moving. Then Danny Click and his band took the stage and double WOW. The music they play is a loud, saucy blues-inflected rock and roll, and play they did. I’m surprised there is still a roof on Coopers Bar after his show. Danny Click is from Austin, TX and the band he had with him was mostly from the Bay Area. I danced my ass off and had more fun than in a long time. I feel so fortunate to live in Nevada City with all this outstanding local music.

I'm Olga, live in London, England - and am a huge fan from way back of Shawn Harvey, a country / roots / rock'n'roll / rockabilly singer-songwriter. I can talk about him until the cows come home ('n' go back out to the fields again, I guess), so instead of rambling on about someone whose recordings you may not have heard yet, may I just politely point you in the direction of his website where you can check him & his songs out for yourself - www.shawnharvey.com
I think a lot of you would like the CD.

The Phenomenauts
The Famous
Teenage Harlets

at Cafe Du Nord
2170 Market St, San Francisco
Doors at 8, Show at 9 -- $10, 21+

THE PHENOMENAUTS
Founded officially in 2000, the act has its roots in Space Patrol, a polka-themed '80s cover band that played all its songs on homemade instruments. These days Commander Angel Nova, Corporal Joebot, Major Jimmy Boom, and Captain Chreehos use more traditional intruments, but their mix of pop, psychobilly, and rock'n'roll is anything but normal. Decked out in bizarre astronautical outfits, the band members enliven their shows with such "Phenoma-gadgets" as the Theramatic-Helmerator (protective headwear outfitted with a theremin) and The Streamerator (a leafblower modified to launch streams of toilet paper into the crowd).

THE FAMOUS
Like an Old West duel between ‘50s country and ‘90s indie rock, The Famous arrange a standoff between the Pixies in a cowboy hat and Hank Williams on speed, six-shooters loaded with punk and rockabilly, and whaddya know - that bastard alt-country genre gets shot square in the forehead, with a stray bullet no less.
-West Coast Performer

TEENAGE HARLETS
harlet style rock and roll has no politics, no tiresome monologs, no talking, no tuning, and no fancy knobs, dials or effects. they play non-stop four on the floor rock that you could drink, dance, f*ck or fight to (for the record the harlets prefer the first three). maybe it's the west coast tone mixed with east coast aggression or maybe just a dash of genius floating on a gallon of insanity.. or maybe it's just the government cheese.

TOSHIO HIRANO was born in Tokyo in the 1950's. Postwar Japan
embraced everything American, including American popular music. As a teenager he became interested in bluegrass and country music. One of his first loves was the great John Duffy and The Country Gentleman. He later became inspired by the Mississippi legend, Jimmie Rodgers. Toshio learned to play banjo, guitar and mandolin and started a family band with his brother and cousin, called The Sunny Bluegrass Boys. He continued playing music through college and then emigrated to the USA to pursue his love of this music. He has lived in Atlanta, Nashville, Minneapolis and Austin, Texas. San Francisco has been his home since 1986 and he plays regularly in cafes and bars around town. The deep romantic nature of country music, its' tales of trains and cowboys and broken hearts continues to sustain Toshio's imagination and art.

"His faithful, respectful renditions of heartbreaking country tunes,
with substantial nods to legends like Jimmie Rodgers, is something
to behold."

I bought the Grand Ole Opry one for $5.00, and it has 25 shows of about 30 min of music & banter each. I'm listening to it right now and the sound quality is really good considering the original medium. The vocals are clear, the bass is at a decent level, and there is just enough crackling & hissing to make it authentic. And there's just all the Red Foley you could ever ask for.

(OMFG, Minnie Pearl just came on.)

There are also a bunch of jazz & swing, adventure serials, comedy, political & preaching shows. They are all super cheap and it's amazing how much fits on one CD. And the guys who runs the site is right friendly.

In case you're not aware, they have a live Zydeco band every Friday and I'm looking to make this a regular thing.
"Like Lyle Lovett with a bad hangover, Fred Eaglesmith is a storyteller who has earned his keep. After his father lost the family farm, Eaglesmith hopped trains and gathered subject matter. Cowboy Junkies, Chris Knight and Dar Williams are some of the folks who have covered his songs. Releasing rough country and folk for more than 20 years, his newest, Dusty, ups the ante by employing Casio beats and lush orchestration. Cynical and still uncompromising, Eaglesmith cherishes his outsider reputation. "I went into a record store the other day, and my CDs weren't in there. And I was glad," he writes on his Web site. His bile makes appearances in surprisingly mellow songs: "I-75," "Codeine" and "Carne del Toro" are slow, dramatic expressions of pain and loss, both personal and professional. Relaxed folksters should steer clear. Eaglesmith's calm presentation belies his deep-rooted, authoritative angst. His is what Steve Earle correctly labels "Real Music." "
"Hugely impressive debut from an Appalachian raised songwriter who has mixed his strong roots with an emotional and affecting modern style. Originally hailing from the Appalachians it would be perfectly understandable if A.J. Roach chose to churn out a brand of authentic bluegrass that could be conveniently hitched to the 'Oh Brother' bandwagon. He has however chosen a far more interesting path, now resident in San Francisco, the Virginia connections are apparent in his voice and in his writing, but they are filtered through a more cosmopolitan world than the one he grew up in. This results in a traditional feel but not a traditional style."
seemingly-pleasant melodies, exceptional musicianship -- masks their
richly nuanced dark underside of regret, loss, murder, revenge, and bad
drunken decisions made in late-night bars. That they do it with such
beauty (and the odd smack of a really barbed sense of humor and a
toe-tappin' tune that's difficult to dislodge from one's head) marks them
as being in a class with very very few acoustic musicians. And if only
more lyricists had their way with language..." - KALX radio

----

"Ian Shaul's music may be best described as a rich bastardization of Country, Blues, Rock, Bluegrass, and a fifth other thing. Ian hails from Lake County, a rural area of Northern California best-known for its pear orchards and methamphetamine production. The number 2 employer in the county is welfare. It is considered by Ian to be a mecca for white trash and for migrant field workers, not to equate the two.

He now resides in San Francisco and plays locally as both a solo acoustic act and as a bandleader, accompanied by drums and a double bass. His catalogue of songs is extensive and ecclectic, incorporating the best of the worlds of Country, Blues, Rock, and Bluegrass. His diversity may be heard on his recent solo, acoustic recording entitled "Pie for Hayseeds", independantly produced and distributed throughout Northern California". (bio)
Scott was born into an Ozark family with a strong tradition of
country and gospel music. At 13, Scott moved to Keokuk, Iowa, where
his father was his school's choir and band teacher. In addition to
his fine singing and playing, Scott is the composer of most of Red
TOSHIO HIRANO was born in Tokyo in the 1950's. Postwar Japan embraced
everything American, including American popular music. As a teenager
he became interested in bluegrass and country music. One of his
first loves was the great John Duffy and The Country Gentleman. He
later became inspired by the Mississippi legend, Jimmie Rodgers.
Toshio learned to play banjo, guitar and mandolin and started a
family band with his brother and cousin, called The Sunny Bluegrass
Boys. He continued playing music through college and then emigrated
to the USA to pursue his love of this music. He has lived in
Atlanta, Nashville, Minneapolis and Austin, Texas. San Francisco has
been his home since 1986 and he plays regularly in cafes and bars
around town. The deep romantic nature of country music, its' tales
of trains and cowboys and broken hearts continues to sustain
Toshio's imagination and art.

Formerly of Cracker-- Johnny Hickman's backing band will be The Radio Nationals following a full set in the main support spot. Madera Road and Victor Crumenacher will open the night of entertainment.

"Hickman is best known for co-founding the band Cracker. His fiery lead guitar sound and spirited co-writing gave flavor to that band's alternative radio hits, including Teen Angst, Low, Get Off This, and Eurotrash Girl. Cracker, founded in 1991 with childhood friend David Lowery, has eight full-length releases to date. Kerosene Hat (1994) remains an alternative music collection staple. Lowery and Hickman together are seen as godfathers of the alternative music scene, who turned gently away from plaid-clad grunge in the 1990s with more countrified and bluesy stylings. Their collaboration with the jam-band Leftover Salmon in 2003 further proved that no one genre could contain them. Prior to his tenure in Cracker, Hickman toured as a solo/folk acoustic performer, had a brief stint in the Unforgiven (a tongue-in-cheek-Western guitar rock band), and co-founded the Inland Empire (California) cult band the Dangers. Influenced by punk rock, surf guitar, and true Bakersfield country, Hickman's sound is often imitated but never perfected by anyone but he and his signature 1978 Les Paul.
www.johnnyhickman.com

The new full-length CD, Place You Call Home, further establishes this fusion of rock & roll, pop, and country to create a uniquely American rock sound that critics have compared to Neil Young, the Replacements, and Wilco. From distortion-filled aggression that leaves crowds begging for more, to tortured cry-in-your-beer songs that confirm Clifton's West Virginia roots, Radio Nationals rock with abandon while clearly displaying a sophisticated songwriting style. Combining a solid rock & roll foundation with powerful melodic vocals, Radio Nationals deliver catchy hooks through original music that sounds both fresh and timeless.
www.radionationals.com

San Francisco's Madera Road is comprised of Liana Allday (Ha! the Disco Ah!, Jeffrey Luck Lucas), Marc Dantona (This Union Standard, Walking Songs, The Bill Swanson Band), Andrew Kitchen (Transmission Trio, This Union Standard) and Jason Kocol (Impaled, Puny Humans). Their music is enough to make you miss your dead dog, make out with strangers, and stumble home drunk (in no specific order).
www.maderaroad.com

Victor Krummenacher was the bass player for Camper Van Beethoven from 1983-1990, the bassist and singer in the Monks of Doom 1986-1993. He also played with Eugene Chadbourne 1987-1991 in the legendary band called Fifth Business, which evolved into A Great Laugh, which blew up in 1996. He now plays solo, and sometimes can be seen playing for Mark Goodman's Magnet.

It's now an Irish bar/restaurant, but they're continuing to have the Western, Cajun, and other music that put the place on the map, in addition to Irish music. Mike the owner is a really nice guy.

I'm not sure how many bands will be playing, but they will be having a pork roast on the world's largest barbecue (Guinness certified).

The new people have a lot of spirit and have put a bundle of money into the 23 Club. The place sparkles now. And the restaurant is open from 8am to 9pm, the bar until 2am.

For people who have never been to the 23 Club, everybody who was anybody in country music has played this club. Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens. In fact, Buck once led the band at the defunct Dick's Tower Lounge across the street. The 23 Club was one of the best-known stops on the Western and rockabilly circuits.

For anyone interested in music of this era check out a CD called "Brisbane Bop" featuring Jimmie Rivers and his band. Recorded in 1960, it's at the cusp of Western swing, bebop, and rockabilly. It's a fabulous CD.
"Rock 'n' Roll ain't pretty and neither is Scott H. Biram. The self proclaimed 'Dirty Old One Man Band' successfully, and sometimes violently, lashes together blues, hillbilly and country precariously to raucous punk and godless metal. Biram ain't no dour ass singer/songwriter either, sweetly strumming songs about girls with big eyes and dusty highways. HELL NO!!! His singing, yodeling, growling, leering and brash preachin' and hollerin' is accompanied by sloppy riffs and licks from his 1959 Gibson guitar and pounding backbeat brought forth by his amplified left foot. The remainder of this one-man band consists of an unwieldy combination of beat-up amplifiers and old microphones strung together by a tangled mess of guitar cables. Years of non-stop touring have honed his assault to a fine edge; his wide-eyed throw downs in the First Church of Ultimate Fanaticism routinely lead giddy followers to a fiery baptism. Scott H. Biram won’t die. On May 11th, 2003, one month after being hit head-on by an 18-wheeler at 75 MPH, he took the stage at The Continental Club in Austin, TX in a wheel chair - I.V. still dangling from his arm. With 2 broken legs, a broken foot, a broken arm and 1 foot less of his lower intestine, Biram unleashed his trademark musical wrath."

"Crashyertown, the second release from The Believers, could also be the title of the story in which the Seattle duo pack up their Pacific Northwest possessions and head off to the music rich climes of Nashville -for that's just what they did. Where Craig Aspen and Cynthia Frazzini's debut release, Row, was more of a homespun acoustic roots affair, Crashyertown offers the sound of a full-bodied band, featuring tastefully arranged productions of honky-tonk country, driving roots and heartland rock. The boost in gain surely strengthens the chemistry of their soulful, well-harmonized Americana and folk - the core of which has the two on acoustic guitars and mandolin."
"The dark swampy folk of Sixteen Horsepower, the lonely drunken storytelling of Tom Waits, but with a more distinctly classic country sound. Simply strummed acoustic guitars, mournful strings, sweetly singing lap steel and an arsenal of odd instruments that help give the record its haunting quality: water glasses, bowed cymbals, bowed guitar, vibraphone, optigon, function generator, guitarra quinta, toy piano, bamboo dulcimer, and more. All underscoring Lucas' raspy drawl, soaked in booze and dried out on the side of a lonely highway, warm and rough and beautifully weary."

"Come celebrate the Resurrection by drinking and listening to songs about murder.

The Pine Box Boys will be playing at Ireland's 32 (on Geary betwixt 3rd and 4th) this Sunday. The show starts around 9PM. There is no cover, meaning more money for beer.

I can imagine what you may be thinking:

1. I have to work Monday morning (counter-argument: so do I, and I'm a high-school teacher. Your boss can do without your "A" game one Monday out of thousands. Ask yourself: are you a slave to management or rock?).

2. I'll miss THE SIMPSONS (counter-argument: this has been a weak season so far and, besides, they are already into re-runs. Don't lie: you know you've been buying the DVD's).

3. My significant other wants me to stay home (counter-argument: kill her/him. After all, isn't that the message The Pine Box Boys are
advocating to our more suggestible listeners?).

And so on...

THE FAMOUS
"The Famous plays no-frills country music of the Bakersfield Sound variety mixed up with some good old indie rock... practically everyone who’s listened to the band’s cheese-free, slightly punkified hillbilly jangle thinks it’s the greatest."
-- SF Weekly
GOH NAKAMURA
"He draws from the no frills, sensitive singer/songwriter inkwell... ultra heartfelt and barebones, much like that of Elliott Smith's early albums. The ache is palpable in each of the eleven songs on Daylight Savings. Impressive." -- Aquarius Records

The show starts around 5PM, which means we can get you home in time for The Simpsons (and with a good buzz, no less). Thee Parkside is a great place: cheap drinks, food, and a ping-pong table - be warned, Possum Carvidi brings his own paddle; he's like some sort of pong shark.

...or you can join us Tuesday night, around 9PM, at THE STORK CLUB (2330 Telegraph Ave.) in Oakland for The Tuesday Night Hayride. This event has been growing in popularity in '05 - it is a must see for fans of bluegrass, alt. country, Americana, etc. In addition to The Pine Box Boys, you will also be treated to the tender and surrealistic cowboy song stylings of Toshio Hirano (truly one our favorite performers - this will be the third time we've played with him, and believe me, he's mesmerizing). Headlining will be Jug Free America, who I have not yet heard, but reports indicate that their guitarist is one of the best you will see playing this type of music.
If you haven’t heard Deke Dickerson, then you haven’t heard the finest rockabilly/country/surf picker this side of the Mississippi. Far more than just a rockabilly revivalist, he pushes the envelope by expertly drawing from virtually every 20th-century musical genre: country, rhythm and blues, western swing, rockabilly, surf instrumentals, ghostly ballads, and pedal-to-the-metal rock 'n' roll. He plays a double-neck Mosrite on a couple tunes, and a futuristic double-neck baritone guitar with blinking lights that looks like it came off an old Star Trek set on another song. It’s beyond cool.

This is not just any old fundraiser. It's going to be a wild hootenany involving illegal acts performed by fabricated pigs.

Okay, now that I've gotten your attention...I just wanted to let everybody know we're going to have a wonderful bluegrass/country swing lineup of the Tangelrs and the Saddle-ites at the Shipyard next Saturday. I hope some of you will join us to celebrate roots music and art.

There will be a special ceremonial burning of our art installation which will be truly spectacular! This is a fundraiser for new art at Burning Man through an initiative called the Borg2. Why? Well, 1,000 or so petitioners for better art and less raves at Burning Man can't be wrong!

-Jennifer

p.s. More detailed info on the event listing.

LIVE MUSIC

* The moderately famous TANGELRS will set 'em up and knock 'em down, beginning with square dance lessons for all us city folk who don't know shinola from shinola.

* The Saddle-ites, featuring America's hillbilly sweetheart, Cari Lee, will break yer achey hearts.

GAMES

* The Hyperwhiskey Wheel of Terrer will taunt and annoy you, and perhaps give you a gift of some kind. Or just a sore head.

* Talk to the Pig interactive sound installation. Ask the pig a
question and receive a very different sort of advice.

BOOZE

The bar will be stocked and the drinks will be flowing.

Coin stuffing starts around 9 PM and the whole thing burns around 10:30. Other entertainments will continue on until 2 AM, or whenever the cops show up. You don't want to miss this. This may never be repeated. It's far to dangerous to taunt the pigs like this...

THE FLYING PIG SEX DISASTER
9 PM - 2 AM, Saturday, February 5
The Shipyard, Berkeley
1010 Murray Street
Cover: $10-$20 donation at the door, sliding scale.
Advance tickets tickets can be purchased through PayPal:
"Red Meat plays country music, pure and simple. Not the radio-friendly pop of the Dixie Chicks or the self-conscious, languid country rock of Wilco, but a more vintage version that involves a lot of pickin' and a-grinnin'-not to mention virtuoso musicianship on mandolin, fiddle, and pedal-steel guitar. You won't hear any power chords; the band borrows its sound from more traditional realms of American music: bluegrass, swing, folk, gospel. Musically, the sound is upbeat and melodic and slightly on the retro side, but

Your body has never shook so hard to the sound of 31 acoustic strings: guitar/banjo/bass/fiddle all soaring over a blanket of electric Wurlitzer piano and brushed small-kit motion. Add to this a front man who dishes it out like David Yow with a sturdier belt and you have the most mind expanding group to ever leave the screen door open.
